RED CARPETS

Best Dressed Celebrities at The 81st Venice Film Festival

Luc Cormier

WORDS BY LUC CORMIER

The 82nd Venice Film Festival is just one of the annual milestones that sets the tone for fashion in the upcoming seasons. The fashion industry changes so quickly, the trends from the 81st Film Festival have only grown prevalent and obvious on carpets since.

The first star on the list is Myah’la Herrold, wearing a black Miu Miu slip dress. She was attending the Festival for Dead Man’s Wire (91% on Rotten Tomatoes). I love the simplicity and the relaxed energy of this look. I can’t decide if the dress needed steaming or if Miuccia’s making a statement about informality.

The second star on the list is Cate Blanchett wearing Maison Margiela by Glen Martens. Blanchett walked the Red Carpet soon after his debut collection, attending the premiere for Father Mother Sister Brother (81% on Rotten Tomatoes). This look did not stand out much to me on the runway, but I really like it here, the printed birds and wings on the skirt drape beautifully.

Greta Lee in Dior;  a fan of JW Andersen’s, she wore Dior throughout the event. Lee attended the event for Late Fame (88% on Rotten Tomatoes). This more subdued suit jacket and skirt is my favourite of her looks.

The fourth star on the list is Emma Stone wearing custom Louis Vuitton as per her contract. The dress is beautiful, obviously, but I am far more interested in this new face.  She attended the premiere of Bugonia, which I only watched part of and liked what I saw (87% on Rotten Tomatoes).

Benedetta Porcaroli wore a custom Prada dress. She attended the premiere of Kidnapping of Arabella, which does not have a Rotten Tomatoes score; instead, it has a 3.2 out of 5 on Letterboxd. I am a sucker for these weird necklines that Prada has been doing. The ephemerality of these garments is so beautiful to me.

Noomi Rapace attended the premiere of Mother (64% on Rotten Tomatoes) wearing Courrèges. This look feels very retro-futuristic to me; 60s Yves Saint Laurent also comes to mind.

Eve Hewson wore  Schiaparelli. She attended the premiere of Jay Kelly (76% on Rotten Tomatoes). The look is very Old Hollywood with the spunk of modern flair. Designer Daniel Roseberry continues to show his aptitude for familiarity without overwrought nostalgia, which is a hard line to tread.

Tilda Swinton looks so cool all the time, this time sporting a white Chanel set with black loafers and sunglasses. The relaxed look is prevalent across the event. Everyone wants to look like they don’t care, although they definitely do. She attended the premiere for Broken English (92% on Rotten Tomatoes).

In a strapless, Giorgio Armani gown, Molly Gordon dazzled. The chunky sequins caught the light beautifully, and the polished silhouette made a simple look quite memorable. I would have done a different hairstyle; it looks like the stylist didn’t want to commit to an unkempt do’ or curls. Gordon attended the Frankenstein premiere (85% on Rotten Tomatoes).

The final star on the list is Rebecca Ferguson wearing Toni Maticevski. Ferguson attended the premiere of A House of Dynamite (75% on Rotten Tomatoes). The textures are scrumptious. I love the choice to go so minimal with the makeup as well, making everything look even more macabre. This was my favourite look of the night.
